The Homer Street Ladder
Jon’s clients required a folding ladder to access their floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. However, with limited storage space, they wanted a piece they could proudly display in their open-plan living area. Jon designed a ladder to fit their modern aesthetic, using White Oak and brass to match the existing millwork and flooring. He began the process by producing a fully-functional prototype, which allowed Jon and his clients to determine the optimal height, as well as find the perfect balance of weight and strength.

The 5th Street Coffee Table
Jon’s most-patient client finally got her wish - a new coffee table to replace the store-bought one their son hulked out on a couple years ago, cracking it in half. While the repair was done promptly, the replacement took some time. Using a stacking technique, Jon sculpted the table from layers of walnut off-cuts and then sanded and polished the curves to a fine sheen. The result is a table that feels both solid and welcoming to the touch. The simple form contrasts with the varied patterns and colours of the walnut end-grain to provide plenty for the eye to explore.

Goehring Sideboard & Wine Rack
Jon’s clients presented him with an interesting design brief for this project. They wanted two pieces to accompany their rustic dining table - made from Ash salvaged from an old barn - but that also fit with their modern sensibilities. Since the wood used in the table was one-of-a-kind, Jon sourced locally-salvaged sugar maple from the Burnaby Hospital grounds, along with a particularly character-filled slab from a sawyer on Vancouver Island for the door and drawer fronts, contrasting the rustic material with contemporary lines and subtle curves. During the design process, Jon and his clients agreed that the two pieces shouldn’t match exactly, in order to blend in with their eclectic mix of furnishings. Jon tweaked the designs to ensure that each piece had it’s own identity, while still tying the whole room together.

Dalton Hall Table
As a retired lumber man, Jon’s client had a life-long relationship with wood. Now in his 80s. He continues to salvage driftwood for splitting cedar shakes and, in the case of this particular log, milling into lumber. While not usually used as a furniture wood due to it’s low-density, for his client these boards held great sentimental value. Once Jon milled the rough lumber, incredible colours were brought to the fore. To add contrast as well as durability where needed, Jon added Ebony cuffs around the base of the legs and ebony drawer pulls.

5th Street Sideboard
Proof that the cobbler’s family does get new shoes now and then, this sideboard was built to fit an alcove in Jon’s dining room while tying in with the shaker-style cabinet doors of the adjoining kitchen. It contains ample storage for serving dishes, dovetailed drawers for cutlery and placemats, a wine rack and liquor cabinet. The goal of the piece was to maximize storage while not overwhelming the small space. Slim legs help to lighten the piece.

Hughes Coffee Table
The Hughes’ came to Jon with the idea for a statement, live-edge piece to complete their living room. Jon suggested the clean-lined Ash base with subtly curved legs to support the Chestnut top while not distracting from it’s unique character. Both the design of the base and white-wash finish compliment the other furnishings, tying the room together.

The Secret Gaming Table
Jon’s clients approached him with a design problem - to build a beefy, walnut dining table with a well-concealed secret. After the dinner plates have been cleaned away, Nav required a convenient system for attaching trays to hold drinks, game pieces and an iPad, turning their dining table into the perfect spot for a board game tournament.
Existing options in the marketplace failed to conceal their extruded aluminum tracks, etc. Jon designed a custom system integrated into the underside of the table, along with a subtle diamond-shaped inlay in the table’s edge for easily aligning the trays without getting down on hands and knees.

The Barclay Bedside tables
Jon’s clients approached him looking for both a unique design, as well as highly-customized functionality. They required built-in charging capabilities for multiple devices, with the option to hide their devices or leave them on the table top while charging. They also had differing storage needs for the drawers.
Jon designed a concealed charging system with a removable cap held in place with rare-earth magnets, with cut-outs that double as finger pulls and cable chases. The system’s components are easily replaced, ensuring that pieces built to last decades won’t become obsolete at a tech giant’s whim. The drawers were also sized for their differing needs.

Smith Partitions, Floating Shelves, Fireplace Bench and Mantle
As a graphic designer, Jon’s client had a clear vision for the partitions she wanted to help break-up her home’s 12-foot-high expanse of white wall, add warmth to the room and replace the existing builder’s-grade glass railings. Together they finalized the design and Jon was tasked with making it buildable while staying true to the clean, uniform look she desired. Installed, the partitions break up the white space, providing a constantly changing play of light and shadow as the sun moves across the room’s transom windows.
Jon also completed custom floating shelves, a fireplace bench and mantle, and a counter-top for an existing built-in sideboard to add cohesion to the open-plan space.
